This weeks review is one that is fitting for this weeks release of Captain America: Civil War... Being branded one of the year’s most highly anticipated films, The Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn’t let any fans of the franchise down. Just as action packed as the last one and with a further injection of that Tony Stark dry humour that we know and love, dare I say it, this is better than the first.

Now I know there are a lot of people out there who will totally disagree with me here, a number of the reviews I’ve read say that the film was confusing and hard to follow. Well I’ve got to tell you, these guys must have been watching a different film to me. Granted, there is a lot more going on in this second instalment of The Avengers films, with side stories beginning to emerge and add more depth to the characters. This though is something that the film needed more of if I’m honest with it very briefly touching on the relationship between Natasha Romonov and Bruce Banner.

The addition of 4 new main characters brings fresh meat to the table, and at times it did seem like it was a struggle to give them all equal time on screen. Sadly in my opinion this didn’t give the audience enough time to invest in their characters as well as the pre-existing ones when tragedy struck. Emily Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson pulled out average at best performances as the Maximoff twins, Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver, with their onscreen chemistry at times coming across as awkward. It’s also surprising that before now, no one has harnessed the vocal acting talents of Golden Globe nominee James Spader. His performance as Ultron is perfect with just the right amount of gravel to his voice to make it sound metallic.

The performances of the original cast as per was phenomenal, with the chemistry flowing perfectly between the Downey Jr, Ruffalo, Hemsworth, Evans, Renner and Johansson. The script of course having a great deal to do with this, and I’ve got to give it to Joss Whedon in that respect, the one liners and humour that is injected into the story throughout the film definitely help keep the audience engaged over the two and a half hours.

Even though the film wasn’t released the U.S until 11 days ago, the film is already creeping up to nearly $1 billion with its gross currently standing at $875 million. The films international opening weekend back in April made it the highest grossing box office that any Marvel film from The Avengers franchise has had. Its figures eclipsed Iron Man 3’s $174.1 million and surpassed the first Avengers film by $7 million, both of which have joined the elite billion dollar club racking in almost 3 billion between them.

All in all a film for everyone, comic book fan or not with a solid storyline and excellent action scenes. We’ll have to watch this space and see if the film can make a hattrick for Marvel in the billion dollar club.
